When it comes to driveway paving and parking lots, the most important factor is the foundation. Asphalt (also known as black top) is not stable on its own—it depends on a strong, properly prepared base. Typically, excavation is required to about 10” below the finished grade, followed by at least 6” of compacted ¾” crushed gravel.
In many cases, preparation accounts for 75–80% of the final result, especially when addressing drainage issues or high water tables. As an experienced paving contractor near Amherst New Hampshire, we ensure every step is done right the first time.
Paving is normally done in 2 layers:
- The first layer is a compacted 2” of ¾” binder.
- The second layer is an additional 1” of ⅜” top.
- The edges of the pavement are tamped to strengthen the sides and promote nicer straighter lines.
A single coat is also an option for a more economical budget:
- Same attention to detail on the prep as a 2 coat job.
- Paved in 1 single layer of asphalt. Compacted 2 ½ ” of ½” Top.
- Edges tamped to promote stronger sides and straight lines
An Overlay could be another option if the current driveway is in decent enough shape with no major defects:
- Driveway is cleaned and landscape is cut back enough to reveal edge of asphalt.
- Keyways are cut at streets edge and any areas where the new asphalt will need to be tied in (walkways, Garage doors, etc…)
- Small patch repairs are made where need be if any minor defects exist.
- Paved on top of original driveway. Compacted 1 ½ “ of 3/8” top.
- Emulation is used on steep inclines/Declines to promote better adhesion
- Edges tamped to promote stronger sides and straight lines
Special attention must be given to the following:
- Drainage: a minimal 2% slope.
- Tie into road and sidewalks with saw-cut edges and emulsion.
- Paving to local codes. Most cities and towns mandate a permit.
- Consider irrigation – conduits should be placed in the gravel before paving to allow pipe and wire to cross the driveway.
- Overlay – to overlay an existing driveway it must not be cracked or broken up and the slope must be good
